Heading into town, Sugar Bag Mountain Bike Trails is Caloundra’s urban trail playground.

The beauty of Sugar Bag is you can ditch the car if you’re staying locally and simply roll to the trailhead from the beach. Conveniently situated in Caloundra, only a five minute drive from the surf at Moffat Beach, you’re going to notice a theme in “The Bag” as the locals affectionately call it. Trail names include “Willy Wonka”, “Sweet Sugar”, “Syrup” and the very aptly named “Rocky Road” and they’re sure to bring you some sweet times on two wheels. Leave the pavement behind and find yourself instantly immersed in nature, riding through lively bushland home to dense, vibrant green ferns; sheoak; soaring eucalypts and native flowers.

If wooden ramps, see-saws and log rolls are your jam - Sugar Bag Road is going to have you frothing, with over sixty wooden features dotted around the network and a whole heap of tricky A lines, and more chilled B lines, to choose from. Likewise, a family ride around “Milky Way” and the wide and cruisy “Fantales” tracks makes this compact network easily accessible for both beginners and more advanced riders looking for a quick spin or a longer cross country blitz.

Park in the trailhead car park at Sugar Bag Road and the first thing you’ll see is the cranking bitumen pump track - one of very few on the Sunshine Coast. This is a great spot to roll around and warm up before you test yourself on the dirt trails. From here, you have access to a fast and furious dual slalom, the epic black diamond rated skills park, or your choice of rides from flat, twisty greens (check out Party Mix with the kids) to techy, rooty, rocky blues like “Rocky Road” or the delicious flowy berms and jumps of “Syrup”.

Once your ride is done, you’re a quick drive (or ride) from Moffat Beach Brewing Co’s brewery on Caloundra Road, or a short roll to Bulcock Beach - choose your recovery approach! If coffee is your go to, follow the lead of the local mountain bike club CORCA (Caloundra Offroad Cycling Association) and ride via Ben Bennett Bushland Park, through magical paperbark forest, to the electric sound of whipbirds, towards Malarkey Artisan Cafe - a beautiful family owned garden cafe in Caloundra where muddy feet and two wheels are more than welcome.
