If the smell of other people’s sweaty towels and waiting 10 minutes to get on the cross trainer at 5pm isn’t igniting your daily will to workout, it’s time to take your fitness regime outdoors with this hitlist of the best beach walks on the Sunshine Coast. Read on for our top picks of the Coast’s best beach walks.
Mooloolaba to Alexandra Headland
If you’re lucky enough to live or work in the Mooloolaba district, you’d be crazy not to take a daily (or weekly, let’s be honest) wander or a spin on your bike along the Alex-Mooloolaba foreshore. Starting at the Mooloolaba breakwater, the scenic track winds alongside the beach past the area’s trendy food and coffee precinct which is always buzzing with activity, yummy smells and other locals making the most of the views in their active wear. The track then winds over the hill (so you’ll get those glutes activated) and past Alexandra Headland’s impressive surf break. Best of all, the walk is well lit and populated from 8 am to 8 pm, so safety isn’t a huge concern for the lone walker.
Coastal Track Noosa National Park
Noosa National Park
If beach, bush and boardwalks float your fancy, one of the many Noosa National Park walks might slip in to your exercise plan of attack. The national park wraps around Noosa’s luxurious shopping hotspot Hastings Street, which will come in handy for a spot of gelato once your hike is over (it’s all about balance). The tracks are well maintained, easy enough for beginners (or pretty tough if you start at the southern end of Sunshine Beach) and chockas with local wildlife including koalas, kookaburras, and whales frolicking offshore. Many of the tracks boast direct beach access, so don’t forget your togs if you’re keen to get a little sandy!
Walking the Boardwalk, Caloundra
Kings Beach to Bulcock Beach
Caloundra’s answer to Mooloolaba’s salty goodness is the Kings-Bulcock strip, which runs past the area’s impressive headland and along the coastline. Begin your walk at the Caloundra War Memorial and let the well-maintained track direct you past the famous Kings Beach ocean pool, Happy Valley parklands and onto Bulcock Beach (opposite Bribie Island). This area is popular for holidaymakers, beach weddings, pop-up coffee vans and surf schools so there is plenty to see along the way. Finish your walk with a bite to eat at Beachview Seafoods overlooking The Passage (you’ll walk the beer-batter off on your way back).
Currimundi Lake Trails
For many northern coastal residents, Lake Currimundi is a forgotten treasure. The clear blue expanse of water jutting off Wurtulla Beach is actually a national park, meaning there’s a range of pre-mapped bush walking tracks surrounding the lake for the savvy hiker. Park on the northern shore of the lake, lace up your hiking boots (thongs will do the trick too!) and take one of the many bush-beach trails down to the water. All the hikes are well mapped, with informative signage along the way explaining the native flora and fauna. Best of all, if it’s a hot day the lake will be a welcome sight at the end of the trail. Take a picnic lunch or enjoy one of Currimundi’s boutique cafes—it’ll be hard to go past Coco’s two for $10 burger deal.
Beach walks with four legged friends
Stumers Creek
Everybody knows it’s easier to workout with a friend and your four-legged buddy is no exception. Nestled between Coolum Beach and Peregian Beach is Stumers Creek, a lazy little creek inlet that is perfect for a stroll, a swim and a game of fetch for your pup. This local secret is 100 percent off-leash and dog-friendly, meaning you and your little friend can walk at ease.
